Although far away from my home of South Korea, an all American country music song like John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” resonates with me. The music is a reminder of the blue collar background I come from and the long hours I put into horeca work here&nbsp; in the Netherlands. Fascinated by country music’s historical roots I’m working on my own kind of country music. Carefully placed on a pedestal against a backdrop, I took their photos one by one. At that time, I realized that my housed plants were from different origins: East Asia and South America. They had one thing in common: all of them moved to a new country, trying to settle down in small pots and adapt to their new environments. Ever since, botanical gardens have represented expat groups for me. Even though botanical gardens provide good living conditions for plants, it is most likely that many of them had to learn how to adapt to their new environments. Now they are rooting on the ground of this country, grabbing its soil and growing new leaves.I wanted to explore this relationship between ‘plant immigrants’ and people further, by listening to the experiences of other immigrants who are trying to root in the Netherlands and figure out what ‘home’ means to them. I hope these stories can provide a face of recognition or support for other immigrants, or offer new perspectives for those who have firmly rooted in the Netherlands already. <img width="5656" At some point, I confronted my anger from deep inside of my mind, and luckily I found calm and peace from my green friends. I printed photos on half transfer paper and hid the text behind the photos. The emotion usually stayed unconsciously stayed inside of my mind, without a clear shape. The book materialized my anger and gave it a shape. It followed me everywhere and sometimes it tried to swallow me up. I should get over it. I can’t let that old emotion controls my mind. I was thinking about a Korean traditional dance called ‘Salpuri’ dance. The ‘Salpuri’ dance origins from shamanism and is usually performed by professional dancers. It is considered a fine art in Korea. ‘Sal’ is defined as a curse, evil spell, or negative energy. The ‘Salpuri’ dance banishes the Sal. It sublimates negative energy with Salpuri music and shows emotions with movement. The dance becomes the way to purify my feelings and allows me to step outside of the storm of emotions. I decided to make the Korean traditional, that is used in the dance, myself. From the moment I started making my dress, it already gave me a certain release about my anger. With every step in the making process, bit by bit my emotions released into the dress. I was really happy because I felt like I found the right material but also in same time I feel worried about making clothes and dancing. I am using an element of Korean culture and translating it into a work that is mine, and I was worried that I might ruin the historical dance. But as soon as I started to make the dress, I feel like the anger that tangled up has been torn apart. I slowly finished the dress and I printed my plants, which provide the dress with the peace I wanted. I then went to the park early in the morning and danced surrounded by nature. I never learned the dance so it was a somewhat strange and clumsy experience but I focused on the meaning of this dance and on myself. A destiny can be attached to a name. Some parents carefully check the meaning of a name and wish their child will live up to that. But a name can’t define that baby and also you will never know if the baby will grow up like that name, or will like the meaning or expectation that comes with that name. The few things I knew about the wedding was that my boyfriend studied together with a groom in university and the wedding would last ten days. At the first time, I thought about it casually/ ok, probably all Nepali people have wedding ceremonies this long. It became clear quickly that this wasn’t an average Nepali wedding, but a very rich one. At the first time I was really excited. Everything was new to me and I felt like I was in a movie. I was working on my assignment in a cafe from the morning. A few hours later, the cafe become full and I lost my concentration. I was watching people and waiting for my concentration to come back to me. Then one guy caught my eyes. He was wearing a full suit, fancy watch and big file next to his laptop. If you imagine the guy who is working at the Wall Street, yes that was him. My eyes slowly scrolled him from head to toe. And when my eyes spotted on his toe, I had to laugh. He took his shoes off(of course it was fancy brown leather shoes), and moving his toe with certain rhythm. My whole imagination of Wall Street completely collapsed. His upper body looked like cold business guy, but his bottom body shows some human part of him. Thin line from a table divided this guy to two different person. Ever since the day, I couldn’t stop watching how are the other people’s legs/feet are doing. And I found so many fun examples all around city. Elegant lady opens up her legs wide, someone was shaking legs like tap dance dancer, double crossed legs, someone continuously touching bare feet. It was interesting to me. It felt like I’m watching whole new world under the table. Our legs are unconsciously reflecting our mind. And then I was questioning to myself, can I make someone’s mind with different posture of legs? What can we read from all the different posture of legs? I took the bunch of legs photo from many people and divide it to left and right legs. I mixed it randomly and make it as a book format. So people can play around with my book and photos.
